Project Management & Dev Log

Week Number & Date: Week 7 – 23/03/20

List of Tasks planned for this Week:

. Attempt a close up part of the building

. Begin creating my product

. Create two model blockouts on Maya

. Start to create the outline sketches for my products

Current Position:

To start off my project I had to create two blockouts – one for ‘Order’ and one for ‘Chaos’. I took up inspiration from some of my research of manor houses, although I think they turned out more like country houses instead of manor houses. I got around halfway through the building before adding the roof, and then I duplicated the same Maya profile, so I can continue doing one beautifully, and add wood beams instead of the roof on the other.

Too begin my production, I had to work on the outlining for my final images, using the screenshots of their original blockouts on Maya. Above is the outline for the ‘Chaos’ part of my project. Some lines look thicker than others in this outline, this is due to a technical fault I was having whilst doing the designs for these pieces, meaning I had to use the mouse to do the outlines rather than my preferred wacom tablet.

For the third part of my piece, I intended to do a closeup on a segment of the ‘Chaos’ part. Whilst I had the ‘Chaos’ screenshots up, I decided to start the sketch for the closeup, as the ‘Order’ part will be a lot easier to sketch out. When it comes to colouring my pieces, I intend to start the ‘Chaos’ side with the closeup, as it would probably be easier and less time consuming, whilst also helping me get an idea on how the overall piece would look.

Above is the outline for the ‘Order’ part of my project, showing the manor house in its glory. Due to a technical issue, I had to do the whole line art for this part using the mouse, which shows through the lines being thicker than normal. I found it a lot more difficult to use the mouse to do the outline, and it also took longer.

Planning for Next Week:

. Begin adding colour to my project using my art style

. Begin to add colour to the ‘Order’ piece

Week Number & Date: Week 8 – 30/03/20

List of Tasks Planned for this Week:

. Begin adding colour to my project using my art style

. Begin to add colour to the ‘Order’ piece

Current Position

For these projects, I decided to set the opacity of my lines down to 60%-70%, so although it serves as an outline, it wont block my view of the colours I choose. This helps me with straighter and more accurate lines. I started with the ‘Order’ piece, as this would be the easiest of the three to do, to to the lack of additional features. Above shows the base ground for my diorama, as well as the wall and wall details that I chose. I referenced back to my colour ideas for help through this piece.

The above screenshots shows the result of the doors and windows. These parts were probably the hardest parts for me to do, due to the areas being small, so it was difficult to properly get their colours in. Also for the indoors, as I am focusing on the exterior design, I gave the inside a dark brown-maroon colour for the inside, mostly as a filler.

This next screenshot shows the roof, chimney and the added name plate for the building. These were quite easy to add, so I got this ‘Order’ piece finished rather quickly. I am quite proud of how it currently looks, so all I need to do is come up with a background gradient for it to be displayed with.

Above is the finalised version of the ‘Order’ piece, minus the screenprint effect which I will add finally to all three pieces. I got rid of the outlines, and then added the gradient background for presentation. As this is the ‘Order’ piece, I decided to go for a peaceful blue hue to white gradient, to represent its tranquil nature.

Planning for Next Week

. Begin to add colour effect to my ‘Closeup’ piece

. Attempt to try out the burning effect for my ‘Closeup’ piece

. Begin to add colour to my ‘Chaos’ piece

Week Number & Date: Week 9 – 06/04/20

List of Task Planned for this Week:

. Begin to add colour effect to my ‘Closeup’ piece

. Attempt to try out the burning effect for my ‘Closeup’ piece

. Begin to add colour to my ‘Chaos’ piece

Current Position

Using my ‘Order’ piece for reference to the building colour, I started off with the base and wall colours. The exterior walls are the same. I changed the hue of the ground colour to a darker green, to show where it has been affected by flame. Also, for the flat colours, I gave the interior walls a pale yellow wallpaper, which will eventually be covered by the burnt effect.

I then added all the components which colour schemes would remain the same, such as the windows, door, chimney and the interior colour design – the only difference being the door colour, which I changed to the interior colour, as the door would’ve disintegrated. So far, all these components are the same, so the only parts left to do are the wooden beams.

The wooden beams – although they have a simple colour scheme – were quite complicated to do, as I ended up making mistakes, such as accidentally mixing up my layers or painting on the wrong layer. I ended up using the beam colour scheme from my initial research for reference. Now the beams are all done, the next thing to do is to add the burnt effect.

Using a previous colour research idea for reference, I began to add the burnt effect to my work. I started with the wooden beams, as they were what I had the burnt reference for. They would also take longer, due to the amount of layers I have associated with those parts. I am quite pleased with how they turned out, although if I had to redo this, I may change the colours for the burning effect into a darker colour, similar to charcoal.

Planning for Next Week

. Continue to add the burnt effect to my ‘Closeup’ piece

. Begin adding colour to my ‘Chaos’ piece

Week Number & Date: Week 10 – 13/04/20

List of Task Planned for this Week:

. Continue to add the burnt effect to my ‘Closeup’ piece

. Begin adding colour to my ‘Chaos’ piece

Current Position

To continue on with the burning effect, I decided to work on the interior first, as there was less of it. As the interior would’ve suffered the most damage, I applied it with three layers of burning. The original grey colour I used for the beams, and then I added a dark brown on an additional layer, before adding the third layer with a near jet black colour – almost looking like charcoal. I am quite proud with how I made that, I could probably do the same with the wooden beams, if I had the time or had the chance to redo this project. I then also added soot marks to the path, where the flames left the building.

I then chose the next parts that would’ve suffered from the burning texture that I am adding. I decided to do this effect on the doorframe, the window frames, and the chimney. I also went ahead to make the interior flat colour a more darker colour, showing how it had burnt through, almost like the interior walls.

I finished off the ‘Closeup’ piece by getting rid of the outlines and then I had to add the gradient background. As this was part of the ‘Chaos’ side, I decided to go for a darker theme background – in this case, a red to grey hue background. I also find it cool how the background can be seen through the windows at the back.

Planning for Next Week

. Add colour to my ‘Chaos’ piece

. Add the burnt effect to the ‘Chaos’ piece

. Try to work on adding the screenprint effect to my project pieces

Week Number & Date: Week 11 – 20/04/20

List of Task Planned for this Week:

. Add colour to my ‘Chaos’ piece

. Add the burnt effect to the ‘Chaos’ piece

. Try to work on adding the screenprint effect to my project pieces

Current Position

The ‘Chaos’ piece would probably take longer to do due to it being a larger version of the ‘Closeup’, and with a lot more detail. So I saved it for now. As with the previous ‘Closeup’, I used it for reference with the colour ideas. The dark green base, grey walls, and wall details.

The next part that I did was the walls and floor of the interior, as this would be a under layer. This would cause less hassle for when I come up to do the wood beams. I stuck with the dark yellow wallpaper, and the brown-maroon floor.

The next part that I did was the doors, windows, chimney, and the interior flat colour. Pretty much the same as that of the ‘Closeup’ piece, only I had a few more windows to do. This part was quite time consuming, as I did have technical issues with my software alongside doing this segment.

I finished the main flat colouring for this project by doing the roof beams and getting rid of the outlines. The roofbeams were quite difficult to do compared to the ‘Closeup’ piece, mostly due to the amount of them, as well as well as how close they are. I have accidentally put the wrong colours on the wrong layers, but I eventually sorted them out, in order to prepare myself for adding the burning effect.

Planning for Next Week

. Add in the burnt effect to my ‘Chaos’ piece

. Add in the screenprint effect on all three project pieces

Week Number & Date: Week 12 – 27/04/20

List of Task Planned for this Week:

. Add in the burnt effect to my ‘Chaos’ piece

. Add in the screenprint effect on all three project pieces

Current Position

As with the ‘Closeup’ piece, I started with the wood beams when it came to the burning effect, as this would be the most time consuming part. Although it was agonsing to get the right colour on the right layer, but I am proud of how it came out. I also used a shortcut a lot for this piece, using control-click on a layer, so I don’t accidentally spill my paint over the area I am drawing over.

Another segment I did next, was the interior for my building. Like I did with the ‘Closeup’ piece, I did the burning effect on three layers, as the interior would have the most damage from the fire. I did the initial grey burning effect I did for the wood beams, then I did a dark brown colour on another layer, then I did a third layer with a near jet black colour. I also did something similar with darker colours for the floor, s the floor would have the most impact. I also added the burning effect on the pathway.

I then continued to add the burnt effect to the other selected parts that would be affected, the chimney, the doors, the windows, and the flat interior. I did find this part difficult also, as I did have technical issues with my software, but I ultimately got this segment done.

All that is let to do for the ‘Chaos’ piece was to add the gradient background for the display. I went along with the same dark gradient for the ‘Closeup’ – the red-to-grey hue. The only part left to do for all my pieces is to add the screenprint effect.

Above is the final result for all three of my projects, adding the screenprint effect. To do this, I got a texture for background. I then hid the folder containing all the colours for my image – background gradient included – and then switched from layers to channels. I used control click on the red channel, which selected segments of the texture, and then switched back to the layers panel. I then hid the texture panel, revealed the colour folder, and then added a mask to it. Although I am quite proud of how it turned out, I do think it looks quite heavy, and thick for the project I am doing. However, for the ‘Chaos’ and ‘Closeup’, it almost looks like cinders from a fire, which could be considered effective. This results in the finalisation of my project pieces.
