Initial Ideas

Project Idea 1

Title: Arson

Specialism: 2D Art (Environmental Concept Art)

This piece would consist of me creating concept piece of a mansion house in a state it was before a fire, and then after a fire. I would consist of two boards – one demonstrating the building as it was, then the second showing it at the aftermath – and I could do another board showcasing some form of details, similar to that of a diorama, or I could do two additional exhibition boards, showcasing the exact same buildings in the state they are, only at different angles. I would mostly aim towards putting my drawing skills to the test, but the ultimate test will be demonstrating the screen printing art style I intend to use.

Project Idea 2

Title: Revolution

Specialism: 2D Art (Character Concept Art)

This piece would conduct of 3 or 4 different exhibition boards, demonstrating a character turntable. The characters involved would be involved in some sort of revolution, fighting for what they believe is right. I could do it using two characters, using two boards each, or, if the pieces will be big enough, I could do a turntable for two characters, then focus on facial details on the other two boards. This would consist of me using the new skills I have learnt in drawing proportions and anatomy practice, as well as using the screen printing art style I intend to use, something I’ve rarely used on previous character designs.

Project Idea 3

Title: Era of Anarchy

Specialism: 2D Art (Environmental Concept Art)

This piece would conduct of a building that appears perfect, but in a sudden state of lawlessness, the building is destroyed at the hand of anarchists. In a similar style to idea 1, two exhibition boards would show the building before and after, whilst a third exhibition board would demonstrate some detail, or possibly a close up on the piece. I would be trying to push myself in terms of my environmental art for this piece, but I will also be focusing on the art style I intend to use, being the screen printing style I have practiced in previous projects.

Evaluation of Initial Ideas

I focused mostly on ideas I have done before, such as environmental/diorama concept pieces, but I also added a character concept idea because I would possibly want to try and push myself during this final project. I don’t want to add to much detail to the ideas, as I want to improve quality rather than tiny details that could ruin it.

For idea 1, it would be something similar to a project I have done before, so I would feel confident doing the piece. I also like trying to push myself to make more ambitious drawings for the diorama. Probably the only downside, however, would be trying to replicate the piece, only with visual differences, such as damage. What I like about idea 2 is that it can help me push forward with drawing characters, which although I have improved on, I haven’t done characters for a project since the very first project of the first year, but this also worries me about this piece, as I am not sure my character concept art would be done up to par for the final project. I do quite like the ideas I have done for idea 3, as I can focus on a part of the overall project, rather than pick out a singular asset to focus on. But I do worry the idea is too similar to that idea 1, and I also worry it is too repetitive with my other projects.

I am not sure of which piece I would do, as I do like the ideas I have done for all of them, but they all also worry me because I am unsure I would complete it all during the time we have got. Even though I’d love to be ambitious and do drawings of characters for a project, I may prefer to stick with idea 1 or idea 3, as I have become comfortable in doing environmental concept art.

Idea

Title: Arson

Specialism: 2D Art (Environmental Concept Art)

The idea for this project is to design a building in a state it was before a fire occurred, and then another design of the building as a result of the fire. This would take up two exhibition boards. Then I would also either focus on a part for either a part of the building, or I could do some additional pieces at a different angle, to showcase more detail, and this would differ to whether or not I need to create 3 pieces or 4.

The building of preference I may focus on would be British style mansions/manor houses. I think they would suit the order side of the theme, because they have a very organised feel, and they have a perfect appearance. They would often typically be residential homes for wealthy or upper class members of society, where in history, they may have clashes with lower members of society. I would need to focus on research of what style of mansion I intend to design, but I will also need to research the sort of materials used to make them for colour ideas. I would also need to research about fire damage, so I can get some ideas on the appearance of the mansion during the aftermath, as well some colour ideas.

For the project overall, I intend to make it appear as a concept piece. I may have to do research on how other concept artists have gone to display concept art of buildings and what other details they possibly add to them. I may also do some more research on the art style I wish to use for this project. Although I have used it in previous projects, I want to see if I can make this piece better than those I have done before, and try to make it appear as effective as possible.

Below are some moodboards to help demonstrate the idea I intend to create. The first moodboard shows the sort of concept art style I intend to do, whilst the second moodboard shows some designs of the building I intend to use to gather some ideas.

Above are some visual ideas of other concept artists demonstrating how they exhibit buildings. Some have done theirs as dioramas, whilst others have simply done sketches of the building, and then other variants of that same building. One artist even started with squiggly black lines to get an idea on the shape of the building. I hope to present mine as a singular building, but I do hope to follow some steps during the creation of my piece – for example, different variants of the same building, or starting out with some simple squiggly lines.

This moodboard simply shows some of the buildings that serve as inspiration for my project. I researched manor houses in the UK, and got some names of them, and then researched them individually to look at photographs of them. I tried to find some images at different angles, to show the shape of the manor houses, and I also tried to search for some old fashioned photographs of some of the manor houses, back in their glory. I also managed to find an image of a manor house under repairs/restoration.
